Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Little Joker’ (='Hoogi021') is a compact, deciduous shrub distinguished by its bushy growth habit and striking leaf color. This cultivar, created from a cross of Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo’, reaches a height of about 50 centimeters and a width of 30 to 50 centimeters, making it particularly suitable for smaller gardens, balcony plantings or as a low hedge. The foliage of ‘Little Joker’ is finely incised, with narrow, toothed leaves that display an intense burgundy to purple-brown color in spring. As the season progresses, the leaf color changes to a deeper purple-green, providing a vibrant contrast in the garden. In fall, the leaves can take on a warm, reddish-brown hue, further enhancing their ornamental value. During May and June, ‘Little Joker’ produces small, white to pale pink flowers that appear in flat umbels. These flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. After flowering, small red fruits develop that have modest ornamental value. The bark of the plant is beige to light brown and flakes off in thin layers as the plant ages, providing visual appeal even in winter. 'Little Joker' is completely hardy and tolerates both sun and partial shade. It has few soil requirements as long as it is well-drained and is tolerant of both dry and humid conditions. With its compact size, attractive leaf color and inflorescence, ‘Little Joker’ is an excellent choice for a variety of garden designs. Its low-maintenance nature makes it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.
